How many times have you woken with a groan, hating the sound of the alarm and dreading the process of starting the day? Despite the fact that I’m a morning person and love being up earlier than most to get a start on the day, the majority of the time, I wake up with thoughts much more negative than positive.
Throughout the month of June, I took on a yoga challenge at my favourite studio (Yoga Santosha). The challenge was to complete five yoga classes a week, and four of them had to be 6:15 a.m. classes. I love yoga, but I won’t say that I bounded out of bed when 5:30 rolled around. However, once I got to the studio, it was all worth it.
Most classes would start with breathing and stretching to get the energy flowing and would end with meditation to gently nudge us into our day with a new, more positive attitude. One instructor said something one morning that stuck with me: “As soon as you wake up in the morning, take a moment to affirm that today is going to be a good day. It most likely will be with that attitude.”
I still want to throw my alarm clock against the wall most mornings, but after the initial few seconds, I make an effort to smile. And let me tell you, it sure helps.
Set the tone for your day, despite any stress you anticipate the next few hours might bring. All it takes is a few seconds, a smile, and a couple of positive thoughts to start your morning off on the right foot – or at the very least, closer to the right foot than usual.
