Ever had the urge to throw your elbows out and bulldoze your way through a crowd of people when you’re in a hurry? As tempting as it sounds (I am very impatient in crowds), this is not a good way to behave in public and certainly not a good way to behave in business.
I entered the world of freelancing expecting fierce competition – something I’ve never been good with. While I believe everyone needs a certain amount of healthy competition to stay motivated and become successful, making friends with your direct competition is often extremely effective for business – and so much nicer.
This week, I had the opportunity to sit down and have a glass of wine with several women in the publishing industry, some of whom are also editors. It is so inspiring to share stories and ideas with other people who know exactly what I am going through. These past few months, several veteran editors have provided me with invaluable advice and have even contracted work out to me. Because I was embraced so warmly in the industry, I want to return the favour.
I have spoken to a couple of people this month who are considering going freelance. Rather than hoard all the information I have received in the past few months, I gladly shared many tips for breaking into the industry. You never know whom you might need as a contact one day and when working solo, the bigger the network the better.
So stay competitive but keep those elbows down and make some friends at the same time!
Happy freelancing 🙂
Rachel, it was lovely meeting you and the others last week. Looking forward to the next meeting.
All best wishes!
