“Livin’ the Dream”

How many times have you asked someone how they’re doing and they respond with, “Livin’ the dream man, livin’ the dream.” And how often are they serious? I found myself saying this sarcastically this weekend after a frustrating day and immediately regretted it.

No one is 100 percent happy with their job all the time (if you are, please share your secret!), but being around people who are constantly complaining about work will undoubtedly bring you down as well. In any industry, your associations are crucial. And as a freelancer, you have the opportunity to choose your associations that much more carefully; they aren’t forced on you by an office environment. So surround yourself with positive people who inspire you to do your best work.

This weekend, Susan Toy, owner of Alberta Books Canada, and I decided to create a networking event for women in the publishing industry. It will be an opportunity for writers, editors, publishers, publicists, booksellers, etc. to get to know each other in a casual pub environment and share stories. Talking with Susan has been inspirational for me. She truly has the best interests of authors at heart and is passionate about her work.

I also had a fantastic meeting this week with a client who runs her own business. She admitted that the temptation to go back to working for someone else and receive a steady paycheque can be strong at times, but in the end she knows that working for herself is the right decision.

I’m not saying that everyone needs to own a business to be happy and satisfied in a career, but it’s important to be passionate about what you do and to find a sense of meaning – it’s your life, after all!

Cheers 🙂
