Summer Fun

It’s Stampede time here again in Calgary, and I’m fortunate enough to live only a few blocks away from the action. Unfortunately, watching people dressed to the nines in western gear and having a great time while heading to the grounds is not so great for my productivity.

As a new freelancer without multiple projects, it’s easy to start thinking that I have a lot of time to spare. And since most of my friends are either teachers with summers off, students, servers, or have their own businesses with flexible schedules, it’s difficult to say no to lunch dates and stampede outings. However, I’m doing my best to heed the advice of Michelle Goodman, the author whose book My So-Called Freelance Life helped inspired me to start my career as a freelance editor. She wrote that it’s best to make plans on set days off, as it’s very easy to spend several hours out on a “quick” lunch date.

The past couple weeks, I have been trying to incorporate at least one full day off from serving and editing a week. Knowing that I have that day to totally relax guilt-free (or at least I try to do it guilt-free!) has helped me stay more focused during the week.

I came across a great blog this morning – Number 7 is very relevant to what I’ve been experiencing lately. Check it out! 🙂 Have a great week! http://www.urbanmusewriter.com/2010/03/10-things-you-should-not-ask-freelance.html
