Despite what everyone told me when I was first thinking about how to market myself as a freelancer, the power of word of mouth and networking still shocks me. This week, I met with the contact that my instructor recommended over the phone. By the end of our hour and a half conversation, she had given me a page of people to get in touch with. I now have several more potential projects and have my name on another list of freelance editors. The clients I’m currently working with have also offered to recommend my services to their peers. I was apprehensive about how long it would take to start building a network, but once the ball got rolling, it didn’t take long!
Never underestimate the power of a good query email. Getting the contacts is one thing – landing the work is another! Do you prefer getting in touch with potential clients through email or over the phone? Leave a comment 🙂
